Allergen Cross-Contact Isn’t Just a Surface Problem — It’s an Air Problem

FDA’s current good manufacturing practice regulations now make allergen cross-contact control explicit in the regulatory text, not just implied, and in February 2026 the agency held public meetings on food allergen thresholds covering how those thresholds could affect manufacturing controls and enforcement. Most cross-contact prevention programs focus on surfaces, shared equipment, utensils, production lines. Fewer of them account for the fact that fine particulate travels through air, not just across a countertop.

Cross-Contact Now Has Explicit Regulatory Language

FDA’s position that CGMPs address allergen cross-contact used to be an interpretation. It’s now written into the regulatory text directly, covering cross-contact from objects, from personnel to food, from packaging materials and food-contact surfaces, and from raw product to processed product. That’s a broader scope than a lot of existing allergen control plans were built around.

Airborne Particulate Doesn’t Respect Line Boundaries

Flour, powdered dairy, ground nuts, any fine dry ingredient, becomes airborne during handling, and a shared HVAC system or shared dust collection network moves that particulate between zones that were supposed to be separated. A facility can have rigorous surface cleaning and changeover protocols between an allergen line and a non-allergen line and still have a live cross-contact pathway running through the ductwork overhead.

Segregation Means Separate Air, Not Just Separate Surfaces
